  1. Place the Swedish torch upright on a flat surface. It is important to keep it away from flammable materials.
  2. The bottom hole containing the fuse must be facing downwards.
  3. Light the torch from the fuse and wait about 10 minutes for it to ignite. The flame height is approximately 20 cm.
  4. If the torch goes out for any reason (e.g., strong wind), drop a lit match into the chimney from the top, and it should reignite on its own.

What is a Swedish torch?

A Swedish torch (also known as a Swedish torch or Canadian candle) is a practical and impressive way to make a fire. It is a single log with cuts or drilled holes that allow it to burn in a controlled and stable manner. The torch is filled with a flammable substance and includes a convenient fuse. The mosquito-repellent version also contains lemongrass extract. It serves as both a light and heat source and is perfect for outdoor use – such as hiking, at a summer home, or a garden party. The version with cuts can also be used for cooking by placing a pan directly on top of the log.

Historical Background

The idea for the Swedish torch dates back to the 17th century and is associated with the Swedish army, where it was used on the battlefield as a simple and efficient fire source. Since small firewood was scarce in many places, a way was developed for a single log to function instead of a traditional campfire.

How do Swedish torches work?

A Swedish torch burns using the chimney effect. The flame and hot air move upwards inside the log, while fresh air is drawn in from the bottom – this ensures continuous combustion.
There are two main types of Swedish torches:

  • Sawn Swedish torch – cross-cuts are made from the top down, resembling a sliced cake. Better suited for cooking or boiling water.

  • Drilled Swedish torch – two intersecting air holes ensure a strong flame. Better suited for heating and creating atmosphere.

Using Swedish Torches

A Swedish torch is easy to use: place it on a flat, fireproof surface, light it in the center, and let it burn. Burning time depends on the size of the log and the dryness of the wood, but generally lasts about 2 hours.

Features:

  • Easy to light; no need to carry firelighters, lighter fluid, etc. Just light the fuse.

  • Compact and doesn’t take up much space in a bag or car.

  • Does not stain or release sawdust or wood chips. The torch is covered in plastic wrap.
  • No need to carry separate firewood.

  • The flame is directed upwards – safer and more controllable than a traditional campfire.

  • Can be used for cooking – place a pan or kettle directly on the log.

Advantages

  • Efficiency – steady and long-lasting burn thanks to the chimney effect.

  • Versatility – suitable for heating, lighting, and cooking.

  • Atmosphere – creates a natural and visually striking fire experience.

  • Simplicity – no need to build a fire pit or use separate fire starters.

Summary

A Swedish torch is an excellent alternative to a classic campfire – compact, easy to use, and effective. It’s ideal for hiking, camping, picnics, or just enjoying a cozy evening in the garden. You can choose between sawn or drilled versions depending on whether you prefer more light or stronger heat.

A Swedish torch is a simple and convenient solution when you want to enjoy the flame and warmth of a live fire.
