The PRIMUS® Winter 450 g gas canister is a winter gas specifically developed for camping stoves in cold conditions. While standard gas performance drops rapidly in sub-zero temperatures, Primus Winter Gas helps maintain stable gas pressure and a strong flame even in freezing weather. The gas is designed for use at temperatures down to –22 °C, making it perfect for winter hiking, ski trips, mountains, hunting, fishing, winter camping, and emergency supplies.
In cold weather, gas canisters face a major issue: as the temperature drops, liquid gas evaporates more slowly, reducing the internal pressure of the canister. As a result, the stove flame becomes weaker, boiling water takes longer, and at very low temperatures, standard gas may perform poorly even if there is still fuel in the canister.
PRIMUS Winter Gas solves this problem with Vapour Mesh™ technology. The internal surface of the canister is covered with a special absorbent material that significantly increases the surface area used for liquid gas evaporation. Thanks to the larger evaporation surface, liquid fuel turns into gas faster, higher pressure is maintained in the canister, and fuel reaches the burner more consistently. The result is a more stable and stronger flame even in cold conditions.
The advantage of Vapour Mesh™ technology becomes especially noticeable during prolonged use and as the gas level decreases. According to Primus tests, Winter Gas provides about 9% more power after approximately 60 minutes of use than an equivalent gas canister without Vapour Mesh™ technology. After about 120 minutes of use, the performance difference increases to about 15%. This means that on longer winter trips, where the canister is no longer full, the advantage of Winter Gas is most apparent.
The gas mixture consists of 80% isobutane and 20% propane. Propane helps maintain pressure at lower temperatures, while isobutane ensures good combustion and energy efficiency. Combined with Vapour Mesh™ technology, the mixture is optimized for conditions where standard camping gas performance would already be significantly reduced.
The large 450-gram canister is particularly suitable for longer trips, multi-day winter treks, or situations where the stove is used frequently for boiling water and cooking. A larger amount of gas means you don’t have to carry several smaller canisters.
The canister features a standard threaded self-sealing valve and fits Primus threaded gas stoves and other camping stoves using compatible threaded gas canisters. The self-sealing valve allows the canister to be removed from the stove after use even if there is still gas inside.
