With every stroke, wood fibers are continuously cut and removed by the teeth. Very little downward force is needed, as the cutting action naturally pulls the blade into the wood. Once the blade creates a groove, there’s no need to maintain alignment. The saw stays in the groove and cuts parallel through the wood.
