What is a Li-polymer battery?

Li-polymer batteries are lightweight and energy-dense. Today, they are mainly used in portable devices like phones, laptops, and tablets. Li-polymer batteries have no memory effect, meaning their capacity doesn’t decrease due to irregular charging or discharging. So, you can charge a partially discharged battery and don’t need to charge it fully. In fact, avoiding extreme charge levels is actually better for the battery’s lifespan.

The self-discharge rate is relatively slow – approximately 5% per month. Self-discharge is mainly caused by the internal protection mechanism, which requires some current even when the battery is not in use.

The manufacturer specifies up to 1,000 cycles for this battery. Standard and cheaper power banks generally offer 500. After these cycles, the battery should still retain 80% of its original capacity before it starts to decrease further.

Charging efficiency is at least 98%, meaning the battery can return almost all the energy used to charge it.

Charging a Li-polymer battery follows the same method as a lithium-ion battery.

To extend battery life, it’s recommended to avoid fully discharging Li-polymer batteries. If the battery won’t be used for a long time, it’s best to store it about half-charged.
