Folding saw – a small but useful helper

A folding saw is one of the most essential tools for hiking and spending time in the woods. It’s lighter, safer, and requires less energy and skill to use than an axe. While it doesn’t replace an axe, it offers great competition and serves as an excellent alternative. You can use the cut material to build shelters, make fires, craft structures, or even carve a bow if you’re skilled enough.

Advantages of a folding saw

Every hiker dreams of gear that takes up as little space as possible. The biggest plus of folding saws is the collapsible blade, which, besides being compact, offers a safety aspect by hiding the teeth in the handle when closed. The handle is strong and the blade is long enough to cut through thicker wood. The MIL-TEC folding saw also features a locking mechanism that keeps the blade securely in the open position while cutting.

An axe wastes a lot of time and energy. When spending longer periods outdoors, saving time and energy is crucial. This is mainly to avoid burning excessive calories, especially when food and water are limited. Gathering and processing firewood in our climate can become critical, so it should be done as efficiently as possible. Stay realistic: you won’t be sawing down large diameter trees; instead, focus on dry wood or fallen branches and trees.

The folding saw is an efficient cutting tool

A folding saw is a highly efficient cutting tool. While an axe is great for processing “raw” wood, a folding saw is a much more refined and precise instrument. The saw can cut through wood quickly without wasting much time or effort! Its cutting mechanism is designed to cut on both the push and pull strokes. This dual action makes it so effective. With every stroke, wood fibers are continuously cut and removed by the teeth. Very little downward force is needed, as the cutting action naturally pulls the blade into the wood. Once the blade creates a groove, there’s no need to maintain alignment. The saw stays in the groove and cuts parallel through the wood.

For most, a folding saw might be a piece of gear that doesn’t make it into the backpack. But those who spend a lot of time hiking or in the woods know that in some situations, a saw is exactly what saves the day.
