1. Place the Swedish torch upright on a flat surface. It’s important to keep it away from flammable materials.

  2. The bottom hole containing the fuse must be at the bottom.

  3. Light the Swedish torch from the fuse and wait about 10 minutes for it to catch fire. The flame height is approximately 20 cm.

  4. If the Swedish torch should go out for any reason (e.g., due to strong wind), drop a lit match down the chimney from the top, and it should reignite on its own.

    What is a Swedish torch?

A Swedish torch or log candle (also known as a Swedish torch or Canadian candle) is a practical and impressive way to make a fire. It’s a single log with cuts or drilled holes to ensure a controlled and stable burn. It’s filled with a flammable substance and includes a convenient fuse. The mosquito-repellent version also contains lemongrass extract. A Swedish torch acts as both a light and heat source and is perfect for outdoor use—like hiking, at a summer home, or a garden party. The slotted version is also great for cooking by placing a pan directly on top.

    Historical background

The idea of the Swedish torch dates back to the 17th century and is linked to the Swedish military, where it was used as a simple and efficient fire source on the battlefield. Since kindling was scarce in many places, a way was developed for a single log to serve as a campfire.

How do Swedish torches work?

A Swedish torch burns using the chimney effect. The flame and hot air move upward inside the log, while fresh air is drawn in from the bottom—ensuring a continuous burn.

There are two main types of Swedish torches:
