Swedish torch and its user guide

  1. Place the fire log upright on a flat surface. It’s important to keep the torch away from flammable materials.
  2. The bottom hole containing the fuse must be at the bottom.
  3. Light the fire log from the fuse and wait about 10 minutes for the torch to catch fire. The flame height is approximately 20 cm.
  4. If the fire log goes out for any reason (e.g., strong wind), drop a lit match down the chimney from the top, and it should reignite on its own.

What is a Swedish torch?

A log candle, fire log, or Swedish torch (known in English as a Swedish torch or Canadian candle) is a practical and impressive way to make a fire. It’s a single piece of wood with cuts or drilled holes to burn in a controlled and stable way. It’s filled with a flammable substance and includes a convenient fuse. The mosquito-repellent version also contains lemongrass extract. It works as both a light and heat source, perfect for outdoor use – like hiking, at a summer cottage, or a garden party. The slotted version can also be used for cooking by placing a pan on top.

Historical background

The idea of the log candle dates back to the 17th century and is linked to the Swedish army, where it was used as a simple and efficient fire source on the battlefield. Since small firewood was scarce in many places, a way was developed for a single log to function instead of a campfire.

How do fire logs work?

The log candle burns using the chimney effect. The flame and hot air move upward inside the log, while fresh air enters from the bottom – ensuring continuous combustion.

There are two main types of log candles:

  • Sawn log candle – cuts are made from the top down, and the fire log resembles a sliced cake. Better suited for cooking or boiling water.
  • Drilled log candle – two intersecting air holes ensure a strong flame. Better suited for heating and creating atmosphere.

Using fire logs

The log candle is easy to use: place it on a flat, fireproof surface, light the fuse, and let it burn. Burning time depends on the log’s size and dryness, but generally lasts about 2 hours.

Features:

  • Easy to light – no need to carry fire starters, lighter fluid, or other tools. Just light the fuse.
  • Compact and doesn’t take up much space in your bag or car.
  • Doesn’t make a mess or shed sawdust or wood chips. The fire log is shrink-wrapped.
  • No need to carry separate firewood.
  • The flame is directed upwards – safer and more controllable than a traditional campfire.
  • Can be used for cooking – place a pan or kettle directly on the log.

Advantages

  • Efficiency – steady and long-lasting burn thanks to the chimney effect.
  • Versatility – suitable for heating, lighting, and cooking.
  • Atmosphere – creates a natural and visually impressive fire experience.
  • Simplicity – no need to build a fire pit or use separate fire starters.

Summary

The log candle is a great alternative to a classic campfire – compact, easy to use, and impressive. It’s ideal for hiking, camping, picnics, or just enjoying a cozy evening in the garden. You can choose between sawn or drilled versions depending on whether you prefer more light or stronger heat.

A log candle is a simple and convenient solution if you want to enjoy the flame and warmth of a real fire.
